The Serial ATA/IDE to USB device worked perfectly without software. I was able to plug in a fresh hard drive, plug in the power, spin up the drive by giving it power (via a switch on the cable), and then plugging in the USB cable to the computer. WindowsXP (SP2) took a while to actually allow me to format the drive (approx eight minutes) for the first time, but eventually did without problem. I also own a new Intel Mac which also was just as easy. Disk Utility detected the drive without additional software. I have not yet checked the throughput speed, and I don’t think I would expect it to be blazing fast, however, I felt that it was quick speedy.
